A cross-country mountain bike is designed to cover a variety of off-road terrain as quickly as possible. It needs to be equally capable of climbing and descending, while also being efficient when pedalling on flatter terrain, or picking a line through tight, twisting singletrack. XC (short for Cross-Country) and marathon racing is all about being the fastest over a challenging course or terrain.
Time is a shapeshifting trickster. Cruel and kind. We are always trying to make time, find time–but we keep on spending and wasting it. We count time, mark time, wonder how much of it we have left. It’s slippery like mercury; no matter how we squeeze on, we are always feeling it slip through our fingers. Time drags with drudgery, yet it blitzes by so fast when we are reveling in the good stuff. The climbs seem endless, yet those ribboned turns in the trees are ripped and gone before you can really even remember them. Time doesn’t seem linear in the context of pleasure and pain. Maybe you can squeak in a few more kilometers, next thing you know you’re late for dinner and that dirt crusted grin on your face won’t earn you a hall pass. So pedal harder, damnit. The clock is ticking.
THE ALL NEW HEI HEI
The tenth generation of a legend. With 120mm of supple yet supportive rear travel, handling that lets you choose how deep into black diamond territory you want to charge, and a beautiful absence of mass. You could call it an XC race bike, but it’s a Kona so it’s so much more. This is our lightest weight full suspension offering; a bike fully optimized around getting from point A to B as fast as humanly possible while still having a whole mess of fun along the way.
It’s lightweight and responsive enough to gracefully hold any line and aim true for the podium. Yet it’s plush enough to get rowdy in rough stuff without losing composure. Calm, cool, collected and blessed with serious handling chops. Get a grip and go steal back some time.

Our intent with this bike was to position it as something “more” than just a race bike, because the Hei Hei embodies this incredible blend of sharpness and speed in a broadly capable, trail-friendly package that makes even the gnarliest climbs fun again. But then Cory Wallace went out and won ANOTHER 24 Hour World Championship aboard it, so, yeah. It does just fine as a race bike too. But the new Hei Hei CR is so much more than that. It couples Kona’s trademark long and low geometry with a feathery light but beautifully composed carbon fiber frame, then gets dressed up in a fitting ensemble of SRAM’s finest. Whether you are harvesting KOMs or singletrack saturated smiles, the Hei Hei CR is gonna stack them up fast.

We combined this new Swinger suspension with refined geometry and a precise tracking carbon fiber frame that lets you get as rowdy as you dare. The Hei Hei has a long-standing history in our lineup as our go-to XC bike. It’s won multiple 24-hour solo world championships. It’s Everested. It’s podiumed at sanity-testing events all over the world. But it’s not just an insanely fast XC bike. It’s the bike that helps level-up anyone’s riding. It makes you want to ride harder and faster. It makes the biggest climbs achievable and if you’re into smashing KOM’s it’s into helping you do that too. With two carbon models and one aluminum, there’s a Hei Hei for everyone. Call it cross-country. Call it down-country. We think it’s more like fun-country.
When thinking about the mountain bike, our lineup of hardtails tells the story of more than three decades of innovation, durability, and good old-fashioned fun. While many of these names have been in the Kona lineup for decades, they’ve evolved with the times to be more efficient, better designed, and leaders in the hardtail category. We know people look to our hardtails as everything from gateway mountain bikes to their daily shred machines and are proud to offer a bike for a wide variety of customers.
